Abstract.  Complex systems are usually subject to strong endogenous and exogenous stochastic processes, and a proper evaluation of the effect of noise is a central problem in social and life sciences. I will present a few techniques for the analysis of fluctuations and demonstrate their applicability using large scale datasets. The forces that govern the abundance of trees in the tropical forest, the way in which parents pick a name for their babies and the macro-evolutionary dynamics will be discussed.
