Abstract.  Work over the past decade has shown that hiding behind the fog of war in both physical and cyber space, lie some remarkably simple benchmark patterns — despite the presence of multiple interacting entities that adapt and counter-adapt over time. From multi-year violent conflicts in physical space to millisecond-scale financial battles in cyber space, this talk addresses the building of generative models that capture the observed benchmark patterns, reflect microscopic features of the underlying system, and can be used to explore future scenarios. Our examples include current ISIS (Islamic State) activity and its online virtual campaigns.
