This introductory agent-based modeling (ABM) workshop offers an interactive environment that allows participants to learn ABM and explore how it might be applied to solve problems that interest them. An intensive series of facilitated discussions and guided, hands-on laboratories are used to encounter the foundational ideas and tools of ABM and their application to answering questions relevant to the participants. The free and open source Repast Simphony ReLogo (http://repast.sourceforge.net) software will be used during the workshop. The workshop's structure follows Michael North and Charles Macal's book Managing Business Complexity: Discovering Strategic Solutions with Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation (Oxford 2007). Based on participant interest, the anticipated topics include:
- Critical concepts such as agents, adaptation, and behavior;
- Phrasing questions as solvable ABM problems;
- Iterative ABM planning and design;
- Iterative building of ABM's;
- ABM execution, analysis, and results presentation;
- The use of Repast Simphony ReLogo;
- The use of Repast Simphony statecharts; and
- The use of the Repast Simphony system dynamics module.
A variety of example models are examined in varying levels of detail throughout the workshop. Participants should bring a recent-model laptop computer with Windows, Mac OS, or Linux to participate in the hands-on exercises.
Attendance is limited to 25 participants. Enrollment is on a highly selective, competitive basis based on available seats and application information. Prospective participants will be informed on a rolling basis beginning April 7, 2014 about the decision on whether or not they have been selected to participate.
There are no prerequisites except for the model building sessions. Basic familiarity with programming in any high-level language is required for the model building sessions.
