First Paragraph: We hope readers of Trends in Ecology and Evolution were not discouraged by the recent article by Pennell et al. Is there room for punctuated equilibrium in macroevolution? [1], in their attempts to investigate punctuated bouts or pulses of evolutionary change associated with speciation. It is indeed a difficult field of study, but one with promise, and one that can be studied by the patterns predicted to unfold on phylogenetic trees if indeed punctuated bouts of change commonly occur.
