Emma Zajdela is an applied mathematician whose research focuses on developing mathematical models to understand and predict complex social phenomena using a variety of approaches including applied dynamical systems, game theory, and network science. Currently, she is interested in studying cross-border scientific collaboration at the nexus of environmental challenges and conflict.

In 2023, Emma received her Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics from Northwestern University, where she was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow and Buffett Global Impacts Fellow. She received a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 2018 and undergraduate degrees in mathematics and theoretical physics from Loyola University Chicago in 2016.

Since 2015, she has worked with the Malta Conferences Foundation, a non-profit organization that uses science diplomacy as a bridge to peace in the Middle East, where she serves as Treasurer and member of the Board of Directors. She is passionate about bringing her love of math and science to young people and the general public and has been active in several outreach programs.
