In Scientific American, Jaron Lanier explores the conundrums of data privacy in the modern world, citing his collaboration with economist and SFI External Professor W. Brian Arthur to begin to understand what happens when users of data must pay for that use.

"If information is treated as something that has commercial value, then principles of commercial equity might resolve otherwise imponderable dilemmas relating to privacy," Lanier writes.
