The Santa Fe Institute accepts applications bi-annually for our International Fellowship Program. These Fellowships are awarded for the purpose of fostering interdisciplinary research activities in targeted countries throughout the world. Fellowships are awarded for a two-year term, contingent upon the Fellow maintaining an active relationship with SFI researchers.
Fellowships are awarded to outstanding postdoctoral students, junior, and more senior level researchers currently affiliated, on a full-time basis, with an academic institution within India, China, Russia or other former Soviet Union countries, Africa, Eastern Europe, or Latin America. Applicants should have experience or interest in the study of complex adaptive systems in an interdisciplinary environment. It is expected that Fellows will continue their research within their home country during the Fellowship term and after the Fellowship expires.
An important component of the International Fellowship program is bringing International Fellows to SFI for two or three short-term research visits to interact with the SFI research community. While at SFI, Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in the Institute's many educational programs, workshops, and symposia.
Because the two-year Fellowship period will be spent primarily in the Fellow's home country, Fellows will have the opportunity to submit proposals for modest funding for research equipment and library materials for their own institutions. When considering support for such materials, particular attention will be given to the number of local constituents served by a project and to matching support from their local institutions.
The Santa Fe Institute's research is integrative and there are no formal programs or departments. The two dominant characteristics of the SFI research style are commitment to an interdisciplinary approach and an emphasis on the study of problems that involve complex interactions among their constituent parts. Prospective applicants should note that SFI is a theoretical research institute and does not have any laboratory facilities. They may also wish to view our current research focus areas to learn more about the Institute's research.
Participants will be selected based on demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research in the physical, biological, computational, or social sciences as they relate to complex adaptive systems. Selection will be based on each applicant's qualifications, the strength of their research and its relevance to the mission of the Santa Fe Institute.
Junior International Fellows - postdoctoral researchers or junior professors less than ten (10) years beyond the Ph.D. degree. Junior Fellows may spend up to a total of four months at SFI (split among two or three visits) over the two-year fellowship period.
Senior International Fellows - researchers and professors, ten (10) years or more beyond the Ph.D., who are involved in research which is consistent with the mission of the Santa Fe Institute. Senior Fellows may spend up to nine months at SFI (split among two or three visits) over the two-year fellowship period.
