Michael Garfield started his career in evolutionary biology and paleoecology before finding SFI and derailing his academic career with questions too sweeping and synthetic for graduate research.  After thirteen years as an independent public intellectual and itinerant performance artist, he joined SFI in 2018 to translate complexity science for the Institute’s social media feeds and host/produce its new podcast.

Michael’s personal interests include the co-evolution of humans and technology, the role of mind and communication in our self-organizing biosphere, and the emergence of new modes of identity and social organization in electronic planetary culture.
