SFI External Professor Michelle Girvan.

SFI External Professor and Science Steering Committee member Michelle Girvan (University of Maryland) has been elected President of the Network Science Society, an organization that supports an interdisciplinary research community dedicated to investigating the phenomena, modeling, and behavior of networks.

Girvan’s research includes applications of network science in real-world biological, social, and technological systems, including Parkinson’s disease classification, circadian rhythms, genetic regulatory networks, and jury opinions. Her recent work explores how network science can reveal new insights about machine learning, and vice versa.

At the University of Maryland, where she launched the NSF-funded Computation and Mathematics for Biological Networks research training program, Girvan was honored for distinguished scholarship and teaching. She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

Girvan is also a Fellow of the Network Science Society, where she currently serves as Vice President and Treasurer. She will succeed SFI Science Board member Adilson Motter in the presidency.

“Like the Santa Fe Institute, the Network Science Society and its NetSci Conferences play a crucial role in cultivating a vibrant, interdisciplinary research community,” says Girvan. “Having served for many years as the Society’s Vice President and Treasurer, I’m excited to step into the role of President and help guide the society as it both shapes and responds to the changing landscape of network science.”
