Thirty years ago today, on November 11, 1984, the second of SFI's two exploratory founding workshops ended and the Institute began in earnest.

The proceedings from the workshops, "Emerging Syntheses in Science," memorialize the event.

In this history article, "Conception to birth: A gleam in one scientist’s eye," SFI Co-Founder in Residence David Pines says this about the workshops: “I would argue that the founding workshops were the beginning of the Institute. Before the workshops, we didn’t know if our institute was going to fly or flop. After the workshops, we knew we were on to something. There was a lot of energy and support. All we needed was a few million dollars, a building, a staff, and a great deal of luck.”
