The White House announced Wednesday that President Barack Obama has announced his intent to nominate France Cordova to lead the National Science Foundation. Cordova is an SFI visiting professor. 

She is chairwoman of the Smithsonian Institution's Board of Regents and was previously Purdue University's president and NASA's chief scientist. More about Cordova's career

Following her nomination, Cordova must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
