SFI Life Trustee and Chairman Emeritus Bill Miller has been elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society (APS).

The APS was founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743 "for the purpose of promoting useful knowledge.” Today it continues its mission through research, fellowships, and public outreach.

One of 38 new members elected into the APS this year, Miller is recognized in the category of “the arts, professions, and leaders and public and private affairs.” Miller pursued a Ph.D. in philosophy at Johns Hopkins University, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees, before co-founding Legg Mason Capital Management and Miller Value Partners. He is currently the Managing Partner of Miller Family Office. Miller served as the Chair of the SFI Board of Trustees from 2005 through 2009, established the Miller Omega Fund in 2016, generously funded renovations to SFI’s Miller Campus in 2018, and gifted SFI its largest single donation — $50 Million — to advance complexity science in 2021.

In becoming an APS member, Miller joins the ranks of Joyce Carol Oates, Albert Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, and approximately 1,000 other distinguished members, honored for their "extraordinary accomplishments in all fields."

Other APS members of the SFI community are External Professor Mahzarin Banaji, Science Board Fellow Simon Levin of Princeton, Trustee Cormac McCarthy, and External Professor Emeritus and Past President Jerry Sabloff.
