Disturbance and Recovery Dynamics in Complex Systems

How can we identify the cause of disturbance to a degrading ecosystem? How can we know if an abandoned clear-cut forest is on the path toward recovery of the original forest? If we dial back the perturbation, do we dial back the system? Using both empirical data sets and new theory that hybridizes mechanism and MaxEnt, I address these and related questions.
