I will discuss work in my laboratory that seeks to resolve how land ecosystems emerge from the interaction of plant species that differ in resource acquisition strategies. Most broadly, I will ask whether the functional complexity observed across the land biosphere can be derived from a low-dimensional biophysical analysis of plant-plant competition.
