Abstract.  Phonetic evolution of languages is marked by regular correspondences, and this has formed a cornerstone of historical linguistics.  Scholars trying to understand the phenomenon at intermediate time-depths, however, often find that strict correspondences are a difficult measure to use.  Nevertheless, giving up regular correspondences and going over completely to edit distances are an extreme step.  This working group will bring together traditional linguists and SFI scientists who have invented a statistical method for discovering and handling regularities to see where the middle ground lies; and aim for the introduction of strong statistical analysis techniques in studies of historical linguistics.
