Niche construction refers to the modification of environments by organisms. Theoretical work suggests that niche construction is of considerable importance, not just in evolution and ecology, but in many other academic fields, particularly the human sciences. Yet, in spite of growing influence, niche construction theory could not be described as mainstream in any of the academic disciplines that it has impacted. This SFI workshop will explore the practical and conceptual barriers facing niche construction theory, and seek to identify ways that researchers in many disciplines can more effectively exploit it.
