Abstract.  The way we view hydrodynamics changed forever when Arnold [1966] realized that ideal fluid dynamics is essentially geometry. This talk will apply Arnold's approach to derive nonlinear wave equations based on geometry, whose solutions emerge from an arbitrary smooth, confined initial condition as coherent particle-like waves that scatter elastically when they collide with each other.
