Abstract. Cryptocurrencies are decentralized, psuedo-anonymous payment systems rapidly growing in popularity and value. Proponents claim cryptocurrencies and blockchains provide unprecedented opportunities for self-organization, limiting corruption and government or corporate manipulation. Meanwhile, critics call technologies like bitcoin an economic bubble doomed to failure. This talk begins with an introduction to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, an overview of the technology powering them, and a critical analysis of their potential impact and pitfalls.
