Abstract: I'm writing a book with this title, with chapters on chaos, catastrophes, self-organization, dynamical systems, psychological network models, and sociophysics models. I explain basic concepts, present overviews of work in the natural sciences and give many examples of applications in psychology. Each chapter includes simulations, statistical examples, and exercises.
In this talk, I will focus on the specific problems one encounters when developing complex systems models of psychological processes and systems with respect to a) formulating mechanistic rather than phenomenological mathematical models, b) balancing simplicity and completeness, c) statistical analysis and experimental testing of complex systems models when data quality is poor, and d) communicating to a community that is not mathematically trained.
