Painting and Optics in the 17th Century: A discussion of "Tim's Vermeer"
Abstract. I am not a painter, but with the aid of a lens and two mirrors, I succeeded in recreating Johannes Vermeer’s The Music Lesson. I have been further experimenting with additional optical methods to investigate, most recently, Vermeer’s landscape, View of Delft, as well as works by Italian master Caravaggio. I will discuss how artists of the 16th and 17th centuries could have used optics to create some of their masterpieces.
