Abstract: "Everything tends to a balance". This is a tautology, as we define balance after things already tended to some state. But I think it is a useful tautology to narrate the central concepts of complex systems to a general audience.

This will be the first talk of a book I'll be writing during my sabbatical at SFI, aiming at doing one talk per chapter.

Now I will give several examples from different cultures from antiquity to the present, that can be seen as particular cases of balance. In this way, complex systems are simply the most recent version of this ancient ongoing description of our world.
