A biologist's perspective of process and pattern in innovation

Abstract: An innovation is novel, apparently improbable change to the phenotype or the emergence of a new function. Innovations pervade biology, culture and technology, and yet research in each is largely independent of one another. Are there general processes and patterns in innovation between disciplines? I survey both biological and technological systems for properties of innovation and draw some initial conclusions that could serve as a basis for future theoretical developments.
