Michael Jantzen (Artist / Designer)

Abstract.  Much of my work has evolved around the invention of kits of parts that can be assembled, disassembled, and reassembled into a large variety of forms. Many of these forms have been used to construct unconventional architecture. Some of this architecture begins with the reinvention of the basic cube. All sides of the cube are subdivided in different ways and folded in or out of the basic geometry in ways that generate unexpected forms and functions. Many different kinds of surfaces can be applied to the folded sides of the cubes, in order to increase the potential aesthetic and functional aspects of each. Any number of cubes can then be placed together in various combinations forming completely new kinds of architecture.

The same system can be used to create a wide variety of art forms including sculpture. These explorations have led to forms that are generated through the same process but originating from other basic geometries.

Many other methods have been explored that generate unexpected forms of art, architecture, and design. Some of these approaches play with seemingly unrelated events that are manipulated in ways that also direct the form and/or function of the project. Others investigate unique ways in which interactivity can be used in the built environment to expose new potentials. Some of this interactivity is developed through the Internet where people from around the world can change the form and/or function of a building in real time.

In all cases, the beauty and potential use of complexity in the built environment is explored and presented in unpredictable and intriguing ways.

Michael Jantzen is an artist/designer whose work is very well known around the world.  It has been featured widely in the media, including books, magazines, newspapers, and television documentaries. In addition, some of his work has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Most of Michael’s work merges art, architecture, science, technology, and sustainable design.

Some of his work can be seen on these web sites.
