John Gerrard (Artist)

Our campus is closed to the public for this event.

Abstract.  In his lecture, Gerrard will present live simulations of current works: Dust Storm (Dalhart Texas), Flag (Thames), and Solar Reserve (Tonopah, Nevada), an acclaimed artist-designed LED wall installation, supported by the Thoma Foundation and the Public Art Fund, at Lincoln Center, New York.

The artist is best known for his commitment to large-scale works that take the form of real-time computer simulations, created in painstaking detail over the course of many months or years. Gerrard often explores geographically isolated locations, as in his work for the 53rd Venice Biennale, which featured large-scale projections based on documentation of the agrarian American Great Plains. Gerrard’s work frequently refers to structures of power and networks of energy that have made possible the expansion of human endeavor in the past century.

Bio.  John Gerrard (1974) received a BFA from Oxford University in 1997 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2000. He lives and works in Dublin, Ireland and Vienna, Austria.

Recent solo presentations of Gerrard’s work include Power.Play, UCCA, Beijing, China (2016), Farm, Thomas Dane Gallery, London (2015), Sow Farm, Rathole Gallery, Tokyo, Japan (2014), Pulp Press (Kistefos) 2013, a permanent install for Kistefos Museet, Norway. Exercise (Djibouti) 2012, for Modern Art Oxford, Oxford, UK and Infinite Freedom Exercise, Manchester International Festival, Manchester, UK (2011). Currently his work Flag (Thames) 2016 can be seen as part of the Shanghai Biennial, Power Station for Art, Shanghai, curated by Raqs Media Collective.
