JOB TITLE:                   Grants Financial Accountant

REPORTS TO:              Director, Finance and Accounting - Controller

CLASSIFICATION:      Full Time – Exempt (37.5 Hours per week)

SALARY:                       Commensurate with experience

                       

POSITION SUMMARY

The Santa Fe Institute is the world’s leading research center for complex systems science.  It receives sponsored funding for its research projects the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, other federal agencies, and private foundations.  Reporting to the Controller, the grants financial accountant supports two key functional areas in the Finance Department: accounting for federal and non-federal awards, reporting, and support day to day department operations.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                                                                        FEDERAL and Non-Federal Award

 

  • Review all expenses charged to grants to ensure compliance with federal, sponsor, and SFI regulations and policies.
 
  • Regularly liaise with Sponsored Research Office (SRO) and PIs on grant administrative issues.
  • Assist the Director of Finance and Controller in producing audit schedules.
  • Manage bi-annual effort certification process for researchers.
  • Update and maintain current versions of all VCO reports that impact FSRs and grants reporting within Financial Edge NXT.
  • Conduct periodic internal audits/reviews of costs and policy and procedure as they pertain to SFI awards.

 

Reporting

  • Produce various reports for faculty, postdocs, and program managers.  
  • Assist the Director of F&A/Controller with reporting on workshops/working groups, participant support, and reporting that meets the required terms and conditions of SFI’s various sponsors.
  • Manage and update shared drive reporting templates, as needed.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc reporting as needed.

 

Other Duties

  • Assist the Payroll Specialist in preparing correct labor distributions, as needed.
  • Assist the A/P Specialist in processing and categorizing grant costs.
  • Perform reconciliations of restricted funding sources, as needed.
  • Keep current on new rules and regulations affecting federal and non-federal funding sources.  
  • Cross-train, backstop A/P and Payroll and work with the finance team to create a positive atmosphere and work environment conducive to serving the organization’s needs.

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • BA/BS required; accounting/finance specialization preferred.
  • 3 plus years working in non-profit accounting with demonstrated experience in accounting for federal and non-federal awards.
  • Experience with Blackbaud FE NXT preferred.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and familiarity with report building.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of NSF grants management policy and OMB Uniform Guidance.
