I am a science writer working from my office in Santa Fe,
New Mexico. My newest book, A Shortcut Through Time, was published this spring in paperback
by Vintage in the United States and Jonathan Cape in Britain. I am also
the author of Fire in the
Mind: Science, Faith, and the Search for Order.
Another book, Strange Beauty: Murray Gell-Mann and the Revolution in 20th-Century Physics,
was on the shortlist for the
2001 Aventis (formerly Rhone-Poulenc) Science Book Prize.
My books have been translated into Italian, German, Portugese, Czech, Japanese, and Korean. (Chinese and Polish editions of A Shortcut Through Time are in the works.)
Three of my articles for the Times won the
1999 AAAS Science Journalism Award
from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (large newspaper category)
and one is included in
The Best American Science Writing 2000, edited by James Gleick.
Most of my work appears in the New York Times. I've also written for The
Atlantic Monthly, Time, Slate, and Wired.
Two of my essays, Worshipping in the Church of Einstein (or How I Found Fischbeck's Rule) and On the Trail of the Illuminati: A Journalist's Search for 'The Conspiracy That Rules the World,' are published in the anthology Secrets of Angels and Demons, edited by Dan Burstein and Arne de Keijzer.
My next book, Miss Leavitt's Stars, will appear in 2005.
