Canada pumps money into hydro scheme.
Energy Current, August 21, 2008 - “Canada’s Government has revealed its first of seven project investments through the ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program. The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources, today backed the Kwalsa low-impact hydro project near Harrison Lake, with US$35 million in funding. When it is complete, the Kwalsa Energy Project will have a total capacity of 90 MW from eight turbines operating on four waterways around Harrison Lake at Douglas, Fire, Stokke and Tipella Creeks.” Read more.

Key Mexican party moves to OK private energy deals.
Reuters, August 24, 2008 - “A key Mexican opposition party scrapped an internal ban against private investment in the state-run oil business, moving lawmakers closer to approving a government plan to overhaul the energy sector. The centrist Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, voted to drop from party principles the rule prohibiting private investment in Pemex, the state-owned oil monopoly, at an assembly on Saturday, the Reforma newspaper reported.” Read more.

Los Alamos lab working on storing wind, solar power.
Las Cruces Sun News, August 24, 2008 - “The big question for scientists working to bring renewable energy like wind and solar to consumers is how to store the energy so that it can be used when the wind dies down or the sun isn’t shining. Albert Migliori, a Los Alamos National Laboratory physicist, and other scientists around the world are looking for new ways to store energy, which will enable alternative energy to play a dominant role in energy production. The issue of energy storage has been a hot topic among politicians this campaign season as they grapple to find a way to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil and lower energy costs for consumers.” Read more.
