Abstract:

A meeting was convened in Santa Fe, May 21-23, 1990, by the Santa Fe Institute for the purpose of further identifying and rank-ordering in importance the components of the enormously complex system that shapes and sustains modern human societies. The meeting was co-chaired by George A. Cowan and Murray Gell-Mann. SFI is considering an ongoing program of research concerning paths that can lead toward a sustainable human society in the next century. The program and list of attendees are attached as Appendix 1 and Appendix 2. Brief summaries of presentations by the participants follow.
