Criteria
We accept papers intended for publication in peer-reviewed journals or proceedings volumes. We will NOT accept reprints, chapters from authored books, or theses; nor will we accept philosophical or rough drafts not intended for publication. Except for papers by our external faculty, papers must be based on work done at SFI, inspired by an invited visit to or collaboration at SFI, or funded by an SFI grant.
Approval
All papers need approval by an SFI faculty member (external or resident or an SFI Science Board member)--perhaps the one who sponsored the author's visit, who chaired the workshop from which the paper was generated, or who oversees the postdoctoral or student position--prior to submission to the series. If the author, or one of the authors, is a faculty or Science Board member, approval is automatic. A completed Submission Form must accompany every paper (see below).
To Submit A Paper
Create a PDF version of your paper, complete with figures.
(If you are using Unix, please take a moment to read our PDF Help page so you can avoid the main problem we run into with PDF files.)
Please complete our online submission form.
Please e-mail the following to Laura Ware ():
a copy of your paper, complete with figures, in .pdf;
a text file of just your abstract; and
in the acknowledgements, note how this work is connected to SFI and what research grants funded it.
Acknowledgements
In the acknowledgments section of your paper, please note how this work is connected to SFI. For example, the work may have been done while you were in residence at SFI, funding for the research may be from an SFI grant, the work may have been based on a collaboration begun at an SFI workshop, or the paper may be the result of discussions at SFI. If you have questions about appropriate wording, please contact the Publications Office.
Also in the acknowledgments section of your paper, please note what research grants funded it. Please include the funding organization and the grant number. We usually note the SFI core research grants for NSF, DOE, and MacArthur on the Working Paper cover; if you would like additional grants noted on the cover, please let us know.
Availability
All of our Working Papers are listed on the SFI website. Most of the more recent ones are available for reading and/or printing in .pdf. Electronic copies will be kept indefinitely on the working papers page of the SFI Website.
We print about 30 copies of each Working Paper. Please let Laura know if you would like a few copies for personal use.
Copies of all SFI Working Papers are kept in the SFI reference library and, although they may not be checked out, an interested person can make a copy of any paper.
Citation Information
When your Working Paper appears in print, please notify Laura with a full citation, including the new title (if applicable), journal or book, volume number, year, page numbers, and publisher.
