Geriatrician Walter Bortz II, M.D. laments the shortcomings of reductionism, particularly in medicine, and notes SFI's interest in emergence.

"Emergence and complexity have their own temples," Bortz writes. "The Santa Fe Institute is notable in this domain. I gave a talk there to the scientists a few years ago in which I chose to expound my theories on aging as an emergent scheme. I thought that this might prompt some counter reaction. They looked at me and said, 'of course, it is a tautology.'"
