SFI External Professor and Science Board member Stephanie Forrest has been named a Jefferson Science Fellow for 2013-2014. She will spend a year in Washington, D.C., as a science advisor on foreign policy issues with the U.S. State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Forrest is a professor of computer science at the University of New Mexico.
"I'm looking forward to seeing policy and cybersecurity interact firsthand and hoping that I can be a positive voice at a time when the cyber-landscape is changing rapidly," she says.
The Jefferson Science Fellows, begun in 2003, is an initiative of the Office of the Science and Technology Adviser to the U.S. Secretary of State designed to further build capacity for science, technology, and engineering expertise within the State Department and USAID. The program is administered by the National Academies.
"The articulation of 'accurate science for statecraft' to policy makers has become an essential element in establishing effective international relationships in the 21st century," reads the program's mission statement.
The 13 Fellows for 2013-2014 were selected in February will begin their one-year assignments in Washington, D.C. in mid-August 2013.
