In a short video profile, SFI Omidyar Fellow Rogier Braakman describes his quest to reveal how chemistry evolved in the universe, from interstellar clouds to living organisms here on Earth.

The chemical reaction networks we can observe today, such as metabolism, can tell us much about how life is constrained by physics and chemistry, and what options are available for evolution and what aren’t, he says.

“To me it’s fascinating that we start with a big bang and a bunch of glowing plasma and the aftermath of that and right now we have cities and countries and we’re sitting here talking about it all,” he says. “How that sort of complexity evolved in the universe is just mind boggling to me.”
