The Origins of Evolutionary Innovations: A Theory of Transformative Change in Living Systems (Oxford University Press, 2011), by SFI External Professor Andreas Wagner, examines four billion years of evolutionary change, ranging from dramatic macroscopic innovations such as the evolution of wings or eyes, to myriad molecular changes that form the basis of macroscopic innovations.

The book covers several principles that allow organisms to innovate and proposes the basis of a theory of innovation, integrating recent knowledge about complex molecular phenotypes with more traditional Darwinian thinking.
