The International Program enables the expansion and enhancement of the Santa Fe Institute's international research community and helps to spread the Institute's unique approach to scientific discovery to countries throughout the world. The program targets areas where funding is not readily available for interdisciplinary research activities and where restrictions on the availability of financial resources might preclude extensive travel opportunities for educational purposes.
Program funding is currently restricted to participants and activities from India, China, Russia and other former Soviet Union countries, Eastern European countries, regions in Latin America, and Africa.
The International Program funds International Fellowships and supports expanded international participation in various other SFI programs.
The International Fellowship Program fosters the further development of academic and interdisciplinary research activities in targeted countries throughout the world. Two-year fellowships are awarded to outstanding graduate students, postdoctoral students, and junior or senior researchers, who are affiliated with, on a full-time basis, an academic institution within their country of origin. Fellows are invited for short-term visits to the Santa Fe Institute where they have the opportunity to participate in the Institute's many educational programs, workshops, and symposia. The fellowships can provide modest support for research activities in the Fellow's home institution, and Fellows also have the opportunity to organize workshops in their own country. For more information, see, our description of the international fellowship, or previous Fellows.
2007-2008 International Fellowship application process is in progress.

The internships are one to three months in duration, during which students work at SFI with a mentor. For more details and an online application, please visit the program announcement page.
The Santa Fe Complex Systems Summer School is able to award travel scholarships to an increased number of international participants.
Since 2004, SFI has hosted an international Complex Systems Summer School in Beijing, China, in addition to the summer school in Santa Fe. For more information, please visit the Program Information page.
The International Program is enabling the fuller integration of international scholars and researchers into SFI's various programs. Some international scientists may be eligible for funding in support of their research visits to SFI and participation in SFI workshops. The program also funds collaborative research workshops in international settings.
