Laura Franklin, hailing originally from St. Louis, is completing her first year of graduate studies at the philosophy deparment of Columbia University. As an undergrad she studied biology at Stanford University. Right now Laura is combining her philosophical and biological interested by investigating the relationships between theories in the special sciences. Skeptical that theories in biology can be reduced to chemistry and/or physics, Laura is attempting to characterize an ideal 'reduction' relation, and showing that it does not hold in those cases. She is also interested in intra-biological theory relationships; for example, whether questions in cell biology, ecology, and medelian genetics can be explained, as some have claimed, by theories of molecular biology. She thinks not!
