My name is Eric Masanet, and I am a second-year Ph.D. student in the Green Design and Manufacturing Laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley. My research interests lie in minimizing the pollution associated with complex manufacturing systems. This involves developing systems-level environmental impacts models that simulate the impacts of all stages in the system, including raw materials acquisition and refining, manufacturing processes, transportation networks and waste treatment systems. These models are then incorporated with economic data into computer-based tools which can be used for scenario playing and optimization of both environmental and economic performance. For my Ph.D. research I am hoping to build a systems-level environmental impact model for computer recycling networks that can be used to help minimize the energy and pollution associated with reclaiming materials and recovering reusable components while simultaneously optimizing the profitability of the system.
