Juan Perez Mercader was born in Alcala de Guadaira (Seville) in 1947, remaining in Huelva until age 18. Es Licenciado en Ciencias Físicas por la Universidad de Sevilla, Master of Science in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics por el Trinity College of Dublin, así como Master of Philosophy por el City University of New York y Doctor of Philosophy en Física Teórica por el City College of New York convalidado en la Universidad Complutense. It's Degree in Physics from the University of Seville, Master of Science in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics from Trinity College of Dublin, as well as Master of Philosophy from the City University of New York and Doctor of Philosophy in Theoretical Physics from the City College of New York validated at the Complutense University. Desde Abril de 2000 hasta Marzo de 2008 ha sido Director del Centro de Astrobiología (Centro Mixto INTA-CSIC), que se ha puesto en marcha en España en Asociación con el NASA Astrobiology Institute y del cual es su fundador e impulsor principal.
