Santa Fe Institute

People

Researchers at the Santa Fe Institute represent many disciplines and range from senior scientists to postdoctoral fellows and graduate and undergraduate interns. SFI operates under the direction of a Board of Trustees, a Science Board, and Science Steering Committee whose members are drawn from leaders in business, academia, and the public sector. A permanent staff manages Institute operations and is responsible for supporting academic programs and development activities.

Researchers

Resident Faculty - SFI professors (in residence).

Omidyar Fellows, Postdoctoral Fellows - Postdoctoral scholars in residence at SFI for terms of one to three years, working both on collaborative and individual projects.

External Faculty - Researchers who participate in SFI research programs and who are affiliated with more than 100 universities and research institutions throughout the world.

Graduate Fellows - Graduate students participating in SFI research, all of whom are matriculating at other institutions.

Governance

Board of Trustees - Trustees are drawn from leaders in business and finance, the academic world, and the public sector.

Science Board - Scientists and educators drawn from a wide variety of fields who as a group oversee the general direction, integration, and quality of the Institute's research.

Science Steering Committee - Group of scientists that advises the SFI administration on science issues.

Visiting Appointments

Miller Scholars - The Miller Distinguished Scholarship is the most prestigious visiting position at the Santa Fe Institute; appointment is by internal nomination only.

Cowan Professors - George Cowan, SFI's founding president, endowed the Cowan Chair to attract leading social science researchers who have applied rigorous scientific methods in their fields, and who offer perspectives that are complementary to existing SFI research.

Sabbatical Visitors - Interactive sabbatical program reserved primarily for members of the SFI external faculty.

Visitor Arrival Calendar - Visitors to SFI generally fall into two broad categories: members of the external faculty, and non-affiliated researchers invited to SFI.

Staff

Staff - A permanent staff manages Institute operations and is responsible for supporting academic programs and development activities.
